What Do Advising Appointments Look Like?
Each advisor has a different style of advising, but common questions you might ask a student are:
- What is motivating you to pursue a college degree?
- Why did you choose to attend UW-Superior?
- What other colleges have you attended? How many credits are you transferring in? Do you already have a degree?
- Do you have any AP, CLEP or CITS credits?
- Why have you chosen this major (or what majors are you considering)?
- What is your living situation?
- Do you have family commitments in addition to school?
- Will you be working this semester? How many hours per week? On or off campus? How do you feel this will impact your studies?
- Are there other situations we need to consider when planning your educational program (student-athlete, disability, military, etc.)
- When you have free time, what do you usually find yourself doing?
- Do you know about…(tutoring, counseling, career services, study away, etc.)?
- What would you consider a “good” class schedule?
- Are you happy with your grades last semester (or in high school)?
- What does being successful mean to you? How do you define success?
- What are you most excited about? What worries or concerns do you have?
- Do you have any post-grad plans?
