About This Guide
Welcome to UWS and Academic Advising! This Handbook is designed to explain the process of working with students to achieve their educational goals and to provide resources that can answer questions about how advising works and the expectations of both advisors and students.

As an advisee, students have clear responsibilities in the advising partnership in order to be successful, and advisors should talk with their students to clarify any additional expectations that individual advisors should have:
- Scheduling regular appointments or make regular contacts with advisor during each semester.
- Coming prepared to each appointment with questions or material for discussion, including bringing a computer to the advising appointment.
- Being an active learner by participating fully in the advising experience.
- Asking questions if not understanding an issue or have a specific concern.
- Keeping a personal record of progress toward meeting educational goals.
- Organizing official documents in a way that enables you to access them when needed.
- Completing all assignments or recommendations from advisors.
- Gathering all relevant decision-making information.
- Clarifying personal values and goals and provide advisor with accurate information regarding interests and abilities.
- Becoming knowledgeable about college programs, policies, and procedures.
- Accepting responsibility for decisions.
- Checking all holds and working towards their removal prior to the enrollment appointment.
