Canvas - How to Use BibliU Course Materials in Your Canvas Course

This guide explains how UW-Superior instructors and course designers can utilize BibliU materials in their Canvas courses. The pre-configured BibliU Canvas integration allows you to link to BibliU from your course Navigation menu or specific modules.

Login to BibliU

Canvas users can access BibliU a few different ways:

  • Click the BibliU link on the UW-Superior website.
  • Open a Canvas course and click the BibliU link in the course Navigation menu.
  • Add BibliU links to your Canvas modules. This method also allows you to link directly to specific BibliU materials, versus your general BibliU dashboard.

Use the BibliU Course Navigation Menu Link

BibliU will be configured in all Canvas courses by default. However, the BibliU course Navigation menu link might be towards the bottom of the list. Consider moving the BibliU link higher up in your Navigation menu:

How to Rearrange Canvas Course Navigation Menu Links

This is a good time to simplify your Canvas course Navigation menu by hiding any links you don’t need and prioritizing the ones that are important.

In this course, the BibliU link is located under a few links included in all courses by default. Keep in mind that some items can’t be hidden, some items will always be moved to the top, and others are sorted alphabetically.

Add BibliU Links to a Module

While the course Navigation menu link is useful, it will be even more convenient for students if you link to BibliU materials in the module where those materials are required. You can do this by adding a module link to the BibliU dashboard or by linking to specific materials.

Add BibliU to a Module

  1. Open your course “Home” or “Modules” page. (In our scheduled Canvas course, both show your course modules.)
  2. Click the + icon at the top-right of the module. This will open the “Add Item to…” panel.
  3. Select the dropdown box next to “Add…” and choose External Tool.
  4. Scroll down the list and click BibliU.
  5. Click Add Item.

Add a Module Link to a Specific BibliU Item

First, add a general BibliU link to your module using the steps above. This will be a placeholder you’ll edit soon.

In a separate tab, open the material in BibliU that you’d like to link to from your Canvas module.

  1. Note the name of the material for later.
  2. Copy the URL of the item by highlighting everything in your address bar and copying it to your clipboard.
  3. If you’d like to link to a specific chapter, first navigate to that chapter in the BibliU reader before copying the URL. Unfortunately, this approach won’t work with all eBooks, including some OERs.)

Return to your Canvas course and locate your placeholder module item. Edit the BibliU link:

  1. Click the three-vertical-dots icon () to the right of the item and select Edit .
  2. In the “Title” field, replace the generic “BibliU” title with the name of the specific material.
  3. In the “URL” field, paste the BibliU material’s URL that you copied earlier.
  4. Scroll to the end of the “URL” field and delete all text after the “#”. For example:
    • Original Link: https://bibliu.com/app/#/view/books/B1B3UWP0LDAD3/epub/OEBPS/c01.html#page_7
    • Edited Link: https://bibliu.com/app/#/view/books/B1B3UWP0LDAD3/epub/OEBPS/c01.html
  5. Click the Update button.

Your module item will now be renamed and link to the new URL.
