Canvas - How to Find a Missing Portfolio

The Canvas New Portfolio tool depends on the URL domain you use to create/access your portfolio to attach it to your account. If you cannot find a portfolio you created previously, use this guide to troubleshoot.

How Do I Change the Domain?

If you don't see your portfolio, please check your address bar's URL. If the URL listed directs to uws.instructure.com or uwstp.instructure.com, your portfolio probably won't be shown.

Follow these steps to change your URL domain:

  1. Click your address bar.
  2. Change the domain at the front (before "instructure.com") to "uwsup"—so it reads https://uwsup.instructure.com/users/...
  3. Click Enter to visit the modified URL.

The "uwsup" helps the tool connect portfolios made at UW-Superior to your account.

Why Does This Happen?

The Universities of Wisconsin share a Canvas system. Each university has a unique URL domain to help differentiate Canvas courses they offer and indicate where that course is located in our Canvas system. For example, if you have courses that are offered by a campus other than UW-Superior, your URL may change as you navigate between that course, your UW-Superior courses, and the Canvas Dashboard. This might make your portfolio "disappear". 

Here are some of the UW domains you may see in Canvas:

For the most part, these custom URLs are cosmetic and shouldn't impact your experience. However, along with this impacting the Canvas portfolio tool, there are a few situations where logging in to a campus-specific URL is beneficial: 
  1. It allows users to see custom campus branding.
  2. It allows Canvas Support to more quickly identify which campus a user is coming from, and to identify any campus-specific support information.
  3. It allows instructors to use the Create Sandbox Course tool under the Canvas Help menu.
