How to Add Extended Quiz Time for Students

This is a two-part process because if you give the student an extension, you need to make sure the quiz availability settings are also increased to account for the extended time. Otherwise, the availability of the quiz overrides the extension because the quiz would technically not be available anymore if it was configured to end at a certain time.

For example you may choose to make your quiz available from 8am until 11am for all students. You can also choose to set a 60 minute time limit that starts once a student has begun to take the quiz. So if a student begins the quiz at 9am Canvas will automatically end the attempt at 10am.

If you need to give a student in this class 120 minutes to complete the quiz, you will need to extend the time available to avoid the attempt being ended early due to the availability ending.

Example of Quiz Availability Timing
Time Everyone's Access Extended Student's Access Results
7am Not Available Not Available Cannot Begin
8am Access Starts Access Starts Both have full time
9am Available Available Both have full time
10am Available Available Both have full time if they start exactly on the hour
11am Access Ends Available Extended student will only have 60 minutes if they start on the hour
12am Not Available Access Ends Cannot access quiz
1pm Not Available Not Available Cannot access quiz

If a student with extended time starts the exam at 9:15 the quiz will automatically end their attempt at 11:15. If you do not extend access to that quiz for the student it will end the attempt at 11:00 when access to the quiz ends. You should extend the time enough so that if a student without extended access could start the quiz and have their full time allowed, the extended access student will also have their full time if they begin the quiz at the same time.

How To Extend Quiz Time and Access

In this screenshot I want the student to have 120 minutes to complete the quiz. Everyone receives 60 minutes, so I added 60 minutes for a total of 120 minute to complete the quiz.

Step Four:  Extend access for the student to allow them to have enough time to complete the quiz. Go back to the main quiz page and click Edit.

Step Five: At the bottom of the page under "Assign" click the +Assign To button. In the "Assign To" box, type the student's name.
